Final Man of Steel Trailer

"He'll be a god to them."

Wow. Now that is good advertising. Many people have been complaining about the content of the previous Man of Steel trailers. I’ve heard comments like ‘Oh this film is going to be too serious’ and ‘You can’t Nolanize Superman the same way you can Nolonize Batman blah blah blah’. This trailer has now shut up all the whiners. For the sake of being short-ish I’m going to purely talk about all the new footage.

The trailer first shows Krypton is total disarray as you would expect from a Superman origin film. From the trailer alone however it looks like it may not be a dying sun that destroys Krypton. It may be, I don’t know but from just the visuals it looks more like a war is going on, or perhaps some kind of invasion. Not being a diehard Superman fanboy I can’t say I would care too much from the ‘Superman Law’ being tweaked in this reboot. Hell it’ll have to be tweaked to make up for (in my opinion) the travesty that was Superman Returns. We then get a good look at Jor-El (Russell Crowe) as he and his wife send baby Kal-El (Clark Kent/Superman to all you total Superman noobs out there) to earth.

Skipping forward slightly we hear this narrative monologue from Amy Adams where she talks about the myth of this reclusive superhuman. I personally think this monologue may fit into Man of Steel the same way Gary Oldman’s monologue fitted into The Dark Knight. From the tone of it I get the feeling it’ll be a monologue that wraps up the film at the end. Next there is a clip of what looks Superman walking out of (I may be wrong) the Fortress of Solitude. I initially thought it may be some kind of spaceship, but I think that it may just be the Fortress of Solitude after a major reimagining. After this Superman flies through space and it’s all awesomely epic and then it shuts up the complainers with loads of sci-fi action.

There is then the introduction of a famous yet previously underused Superman villain: General Zod. If anyone was worried about Zod not being intense enough, they can calm themselves because it looks like Michael Shannon is going to be the creepy psychopath Zod needs to be. I can see Zod being Cillain Murphy’s Scarecrow crossed with Robert Carlyle’s Begbie from Trainspotting. Yeah imagine that combination. The short two lines of Zod are actually my favourite parts of the trailer. Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan have always been good with their casting choices and Michael Shannon looks and sounds like a perfect Zod. The clip also suggests (to me at least) that Zod will be hunting down Superman for revenge after some clash with Jor-El.

After that there’s more awesomeness with explosions, bright J.J Abrams-ish lights, Superman flying around punching things while giving his own short monologue. The trailer finishes with a scene that seems to intrigue people the most, a scene with Amy Adams’ Lois Lane talking to Superman. I won’t spoil the dialogue for you but I think (from this dialogue alone) that if this is the direction they are going in to bring Superman into a realistic world, this is a very clever way of doing so.
