Guardians of the Galaxy

After stealing a mysterious orb in the far reaches of outer space, Peter Quill is now the main target of a manhunt led by the villain known as Ronan the Accuser. To help fight Ronan and his team and save the galaxy from his power, Quill creates a team known as the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' to save the world. The film stars Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax and Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel as the voices of Rocket Raccoon and Groot.
You may be wondering why this plot summary was taken from IMDB. The answer to that is simple, I couldn’t really be bothered to create my own so all rights to this synopsis clearly goes to ‘James Hake’.

This is Marvel’s riskiest film in the sense that they’re using unknown characters from the comics and have a lesser known lead actor in the form of Chris Pratt. However I am happy to say that Marvel’s gamble totally paid off because Guardians of the Galaxy is an incredibly hilarious and fun action sci-fi film. And I don’t say that lightly.

Every single aspect of what this movie was trying to be it excels at, in the case of comedy, sci-fi and action. It fits right in with Marvel’s other films and in my opinion exceeds every one of them. It blends humour with these quirky characters perfectly and is reminiscent of The Original Star Wars Trilogy. The script itself has extremely fast and snappy dialogue which in places is comedic and when it needs to be more emotional it is. This was a huge surprise when some of said dialogue coming out of a CGI Raccoon’s mouth.

The action sequences are solid and each character always has an obvious role to play in the story with recognised motivations. I would call this film a character led film rather than a story driven film however, as some of the elements set up early on appear to get lost in the shuffle. However it is still incredible to me that Marvel needed several separate stories to set up their last ensemble piece and if I’m honest I think this Guardians of the Galaxy established its characters even better than The Avengers.

I honestly have no problems with this film. It’s a hilarious, fun and the characters are some of the best I’ve seen in a comic book film or any other all summer. The soundtrack is excellent also with some great gems from the 70s.
