I have to give credit to the film by managing to stay separate
enough in tone from the first two Iron Man films. The film feels completely
different and it works reasonably well because Tony isn’t the same person he
was at the beginning of Iron Man. What happened in The Avengers affected him
and the film did well at addressing that. There are a few nods here and there
to the other characters in the universe but if I’m totally honest it wasn’t
convincing enough to me that the other team members and S.H.I.E.L.D would stay
away from Tony through the whole duration of the film.
That was my first problem with the film. My second problem is the fact that it goes into directions that were (in my
opinion) not very well handled. I didn’t like many of the plot twists in the
film and I felt Ben Kinglsey was totally wasted. I can also see Marvel comic
book fans hating the direction of The Mandarin’s character. I also wasn’t happy with Guy Pearce’s
character and I felt that his character mirrored Jim Carrey’s Riddler in Batman
Forever. I thought they would have learned from Joel Schumacher’s mistakes.
The action sequences are brilliant, with enough
new ideas to keep me entertained and interested. The film’s climax is all sorts
of epic. I thought Don Cheadle was far better in this film than he was in Iron
Man 2, as he actually added something unlike his last appearance where they
could have had James Marsden playing Rhodes and I wouldn’t have known the
difference.
It is very difficult to review the film without spoiling it
as there is reveals in the plot that I can’t even mention. I am still hoping that Downey Jr will return
for an Avengers sequel and I give this film 7.2/10.
