“To paint comic books as childish and illiterate is lazy. A lot of comic books are very literate unlike most films.”
Alan Moore is an eccentric and influential writer who has
written many books with challenging themes and political messages. However what
makes Moore so interesting is complete rejection of system that allows his
graphic novels to be written. Moore never cared for fame or fortune, he simply
wanted to continue writing novels which causes readers to genuinely think about
society. This could be an incredible basis for a film, a man who stood up and said
that he has ideas, and acclaimed graphic novels is what he has to show for it. The
film could explore how Moore came to write Watchmen
and V For Vendetta, novels that truly
said things about modern society that other writers would not have dared or
even believed could be written about.
Obviously it would be impossible to ignore Moore’s rejection
of Hollywood and the films that were made from his novels. This perhaps would
be a focus in the story, Moore’s attempt to write books that could never be
done justice on screen, novels that pushed the boundaries on what a story on
paper could be. It could also explore how the readers of comics at the time
were forced to write about contemporary superheroes while Moore refused. After
many offers Moore eventually took on Batman writing the greatest Joker story of
all time in Killing Joke. This would
emphasise Moore’s talent taking characters and rejecting the idea that
something as trivial and standard as Batman story could ever be as meaningful
as his previous work such as Watchmen
while also showing that everything Moore touched turned to gold.
I know Moore would ever allow this film to be made but I
honestly believe that it would be an intriguing look at one of the greatest
writers of all time. With a title like “The
Original Writer”.
