X-Men: Days of Future Past

'I probably shouldn't be asking this sort of thing... but in the future, do I make it?'

This film was highly anticipated for me and in terms of superhero movie hype I place it on par with the likes of The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises. This X-Men film is totally unique as it amalgamates the franchise’s main series with the prequel film First Class. It’s unlike any X-Film we’ve seen before and unlike any comic book film we’ve seen before for that matter.

The plot is complex with the original cast of characters lead by Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where machines called sentinels have hunted down and destroyed a vast majority of the mutant and human population. A plan to send Wolverine back in time is hatched and he is send to fix the past and save the future. There he meets younger Charles and Erik once again played by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. Are you keeping up?

It’s safe to say that if you’re not a fan of the X-Men series this is not the film that’s going to change your mind. As ambitious and spectacular as this film is (words from a fan) you really do have to do your homework before attempting to unravel the plot twists and turns that Days of Future Past throws at us. I’m not going to lie about it for the sake of not looking like a huge fan boy, I absolutely adored this film from start to finish. It has everything you could want from a summer film and a film in general. It has action, adventure, heart, all the things you’d expect from a film directed by the man who brought us X-Men 1 & 2.

Say what you will about Bryan Singer (concerning his personal life) but as a storyteller and director he totally gets the tone and characters of this series. There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that this film must have taken very careful planning and preparation in order for it to deliver a story of such scope. Fans of the series will be happy to know that this film uses its time travel storyline to correct so many mistakes that we have put up with for so long. It makes certain scenes and even films in the series completely relevant and less relevant when made appropriate.

The acting of this film is as incredible as you’d expect from a cast with such range. The past and future versions of the characters we know and love work so well and without giving away spoilers I’ll say that each character is made more relevant from this film. As good as every character was in the film (and I mean that, EVERYONE brought their A game to the table) the break-out character for me was Quicksilver. The character was just so great and entertaining. You can put those worries you had about him when you saw his goofy suit to rest, he honestly has some of the best scenes in this film. I know the situation Marvel has with his character and I can say this now: good luck Aaron Taylor-Johnson because my god have you got some shoes to fill.

I may put out an extended spoiler review if I have the time but for now I can conclude by saying that from a fan of the series this is a total tribute to the characters we know and love. 5/5
