Batman vs. Superman Pushed Back to 2016

Batman vs. Superman’s original release date was to be the summer of 2015. As you all know that is a very crowded year for blockbuster films with Star Wars: Episode VII, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Bond 25, to name a few. The news today is that Warner Bros. (more specifically the production team of Batman vs. Superman) have announced that the release date for the much anticipated Man of Steel sequel has been pushed back an entire year.

I have read much speculation on this subject. People suggesting that it was Ben Affleck who made the call due to dissatisfaction with the film’s script. This rumour I can believe due to Affleck being more or less Warner Bros.’ golden boy since the success of Argo, so of course they would be willing to cater to whatever he wants. Affleck has also become a perfectionist when it comes to his movies and obviously he does not want a repeat of Daredevil. Some have even suggested that Affleck may have broken his leg while training. I personally don’t buy that one.

Warner Bros.’ official statement (linked below) basically says that the reason is that the production crew simply need more time to realise their ideas. I hope that is the reason as I would be happy knowing that the push back is being done to preserve the film’s quality. Similar to why Star Wars: Episode VII was pushed back to December rather than May. The production team should always have the final say, because in my humble opinion it’d be miles better having a well-made late film than a rushed poorly made one. Think about that people!

Anyway I also have an inkling that the answer may be much simpler than all these ideas. Personally I think that Warner Bros. do not want to release their biggest film ever in such a busy year. Batman vs. Superman is their shot at competing with Marvel and they absolutely do not want to waste that.
