Another Wolverine Movie... Really?

'What do you want - an apology?'

I personally have not seen The Wolverine yet, I plan to and have read some positive reviews on it but I suppose I just haven’t gotten around to it. But I was under the impression that Hugh Jackman was being cautious as to whether or not he’d be portraying that a character again after Days of Future Past (highly anticipated by me by the way).

My problem with the news that another solo Wolverine film is on the cards is simple. Wolverine is a character who’s most interesting characteristic is being difficult to work with. Therefore naturally having him part of a team like the X-Men, (particularly a team that is being run by someone he hates like Cyclops) is the most interesting thing that can be done with his character. It’s like having a Han Solo movie or a Breaking Bad spin off starring Jesse Pinkman.

It just doesn’t work as a natural progression for the character. X-Men: Origins Wolverine was horrible and completely ruined his origin as far as the film timeline goes. Origins being a terrible film isn’t even the main reason I have a problem with it. We were told Wolverine’s origin story to the extent we needed in X2. Which incorporated his backgrounds into a huge aspect of the plot, and as we all know was a far superior film for doing so.

For this reason I guess I just do not care what Wolverine’s following adventures are. Having to work in a collaborating situation Wolverine is a highly entertaining and interestingly damaged character. Even his tiny cameo in X-Men: First Class emphasised this. When taken out of that he’s just an asshole who says ‘bub’ a lot and mopes around at the loss he’s been through. Sure it’s sad and whatever, but as an audience, we just don’t care… Well at least I don’t.

Charles and Eric were always the main point, with X-Men tackling issues such as race. Naturally these two characters were the best in being able to show this issue as they had opposing views. Wolverine has never been a character that particularly stressed what X-Men was all about.

You may have read this and just thought I am misinformed due to having not seen his most recent film. But if I am honest, having read many of Wolverine’s comic book stories I can tell you that the films as a whole I have a problem with. Never really have they treated Wolverine as he should have been treated. Wolverine was always the cool supporting character. In conclusion he was always just a piece of a much bigger picture.
