Having only recently seen and enjoyed the original film I was pleasantly optimistic about this one. The trailers did put me off slightly as it looked like the Minions were going to be forced and overused. I understand how these characters appeal to children and I enjoyed watching them here. Thankfully I never thought they had too much screen time, in fact I wouldn't have minded even more from them. Ultimately though this film is still about Gru and I liked that. The formula hasn't really changed and this film offers the same slapstick humour that the original had. So if you did not enjoy the first film, this sequel isn't going to change your mind.
The animation of the film is very crisp and clean looking. This is expected by today's audience but it is impressive to me that these films look as good as they do when they are made on a much lower budget than something made by Dreamworks or Pixar. Speaking of which, I was happy to discover that Despicable Me 2 doesn't take the generic plot line approach that those two studios may have taken. For example, as Gru is no longer a villain at the end of the first film it would have easy for the writers to just make him bad again to try and recreate it's success. This film takes the characters in different directions and I appreciated that.
To conclude the film is made well, is funny, has a great voice cast and made me feel like a kid again. I give this film a 7.5/10.
