Potential Biopics #1 - George Lucas

"A special effect is a tool, a means of telling a story. A special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing."

The idea of a film being about a real person or people has always intrigued me. The idea of an actor replicating the mannerisms and speech patterns of another person seems so absurd and interesting that whenever a biopic comes out I try my hardest to see it. Now there are plenty of fascinating people out there whose lives would make very absorbing feature films. This is going to be a segment where I talk about potential biopic based on the life of someone with a story to tell.

For many years I have been intrigued by the life and work of George Lucas and not necessarily because he has always done things that I agree with. If a film on his life were to be made, that film could start off with us connecting to an intelligent young film maker who hates the studio system. Perhaps having him full of confidence after the success of American Graffiti, he could then proceed to visualize Star Wars and eventually tries to get a very "preposterous" sold to a studio.

I would love to see the stress it took for him to make the first Star Wars film. How he poured his heart and soul into it, while it still being a collaborative effort. Lucas should be seen having meeting after meeting with studio executives who try hard to pry the Star Wars rights from his grasp. The film would be a huge and overwhelming success with Lucas becoming a millionaire overnight. Lucas would then be on a high through the making of The Empire Strikes Back. The film should then emphasize his decision to place Ewoks into Return of the Jedi to produce plenty of merchandise; this would then foreshadow his years working on the prequels.

After the huge success of the series Lucas then starts on his prequel trilogy, convincing everyone involved (particularly Rick McCallum) that the films would be just as well received by fans as his original trilogy. Lucas takes advantage of the fan buzz by adding plenty of elements to The Phantom Menace that would be profitable for merchandising. The film would be badly received, and the next two would confirm Lucas' huge change from independent film maker who hates the studio system, to old selfish businessman. After years of receiving hate from his "fans" for his work on the prequels, Lucas sells the rights (he so desperately tried to hold onto years before) to Disney. The film should also touch upon how Lucas' technology mean't that film achievements like The Lord of the Rings Trilogy could be made.

This is obviously a very brief synopsis of how the film's plot could be and the casting of George Lucas would be a difficult task. Casting a young actor who goes on to play someone through all the years of their life can be done, it was done with Robert Downey Jr with Chaplin  through prosthetics.

Now if I think of someone else for this segment I shall write it out for you all to read.
